Recommend useful additions after a Shopify purchase
A useful cross-sell starts with something the customer already chose. Someone who bought a carafe may appreciate matching glasses; someone who already bought the whole set probably does not need the same invitation.
Getsitecontrol can connect a Shopify order event to an email containing the purchased products and complementary recommendations. The important choices are which event starts the message, which products qualify, and whether you are suggesting an addition or an alternative.
The Order + add-ons premade combines the original purchase with a separate recommendation section. Its starting copy thanks the customer and says the order is being processed. For a delayed cross-sell, replace that status wording with the reason for your recommendation, and select the appropriate complementary products. Keep the order-status link secondary to the new offer.
Choose the moment before choosing the products
Use New order when the follow-up should start after purchase. Use Fulfilled order when it should start from fulfillment, then add a delay if customers need time to receive or use the product.
A fulfillment event is not delivery confirmation. For a message about using the purchase, allow for shipping time and avoid claiming that the order has arrived. A promotional follow-up also does not replace the store's transactional order confirmation or shipping message.
For our example, the store will recommend glasses after a carafe order. We will use New order and a two-day delay. That is a sample schedule to test, not a promise that the extra items can be added to the original shipment.
Select the order, not merely the customer
In the automation's Filters, use the order's product or variant conditions to select carafe purchases. Add an exclusion for orders already containing the matching glasses if that is the specific offer you plan to send.
These are event conditions: they describe the order that started the automation. Contact conditions such as total spend and order count describe the buyer's broader history. A high-spend customer might have placed a small order today; those facts are not interchangeable.
For a focused campaign, combine “order includes the carafe” AND “order does not include the glasses.” Review the available matching operators when selecting several product IDs. Test an order with only the carafe, one with both products, and an unrelated order.
An exclusion on this order does not prove the customer has never bought the accessory before. If avoiding repeat recommendations is essential, use a reliable customer tag or custom field maintained by your data process, or choose a more general message.
Choose the right product source
| Email element or feed | What it is for | Use in this example |
|---|---|---|
| Purchased items | Products from the order that triggered New order. | A brief reminder of the original carafe purchase. |
| Fulfilled items | Products associated with the Fulfilled order event. | Use when the sequence starts from fulfillment instead. |
| Complementary to new order | Products often bought with the purchased items. | Suggestions intended to work with the purchase. |
| Related to new order | Products similar to the purchased items. | Alternatives or similar items; check whether they suit a post-purchase message. |
| Customer may also like | Suggestions based on purchase history. | A broader recommendation when the message is about the customer rather than this order. |
The recommendation feeds are available through Product cards. They are distinct from the Purchased items block. Adding purchased items alone shows the original purchase; it does not automatically create a cross-sell selection.
For a compatibility-sensitive product, choose the accessory manually or use a carefully curated collection. A recommendation is not a compatibility guarantee. Check sizes, variants, and supported models before describing two products as a working pair.
Write the reason for the recommendation
A useful addition to your new carafe
PreviewMatching glasses for everyday meals and weekend tables.
Thank you for choosing our glass carafe.
If you're putting together a set, the matching tumblers share its simple shape and fit comfortably on a small table.
You can see the sizes and set options below. Any additional purchase will be a separate order.

This example requires the carafe-specific filter described above. For a general recommendation feed, use broader copy that remains accurate whichever products appear. Avoid hardcoding “matching glasses” over a feed that may contain other items.
Choose a premade post-purchase layout or a Design ideas layout in the email editor. Keep the recommendation close to the explanation and avoid a long grid that makes the message look like a general sale campaign.
Personalize order references accurately
The variable picker provides Order ID and Order URL in order-based automations. Order ID identifies the purchase; Order URL leads to its status page. Use the latter for a secondary “View your order” link, not as the destination of the accessory offer.
A button promoting the glasses should lead to their product or collection page. Shopify email actions also include Add to cart and Buy now for configured product variants. These actions do not mean “add to the order you already placed.” Make the next purchase clear in both the button wording and surrounding text.
Keep order-specific content in the order-triggered automation where it belongs. Do not assume a general workflow started manually will have a particular order available for its variables and product blocks.
Use action filters when one automation serves several products
You can create separate email actions for different product groups and put product conditions on each. This is useful when carafe buyers need glass recommendations and candle buyers need care accessories.
Consider the mixed order before activating the sequence. A customer buying both qualifying products can match both email actions. If you want one email per order, make the conditions mutually exclusive or write one combined message. Independent action filters should not be treated as an automatic first-match branch.
Put shared restrictions at entry and message-specific restrictions on the email. If you put the carafe condition on the trigger, candle-only orders cannot reach the later candle email.
Test the products, links, and exceptions
Send a visual test, then exercise the automation with suitable test orders so the dynamic content has real context. Confirm that purchased items show the original order and recommendations show the intended additions.
Check mixed orders and orders already containing the accessory. Test the status link separately from the product button. If customers can place another order during your delay, decide how that should affect the later message and verify your action filters accordingly.
Cross-sell and review requests have different jobs. Give each a clear place in the post-purchase journey instead of competing for attention in the same email. Assess which recommendations produce useful follow-up purchases, and remove combinations that customers repeatedly ignore.
